St Michael’s church is open from 9.30am
to 1.00pm most days of the week. Tea
and coffee and light
refreshments are
served from
10.30 to
12.30pm on
those days.
Please drop
in for a chat
and a cup of
tea or coffee.
For visitors to the
Town we can open at
other
times on request by contacting the Parish
Office.
St Michael’s church is also a good and
popular venue for concerts, exhibitions,
workshops and meetings. Our facilities
are described on this website. Please
contact clergypa@googlemail.com for
further details.
The church is situated in a pedestrianised
area but there is a large multi-story car
park within three minutes walk on
Churchill Way. Free evening parking is
available behind the Town Hall off
Jordangate. Please see the map on this
site for further details.
Once again we were pleased to welcome
many visitors to St Michael’s during the weekend, when children helped to
complete a giant jigsaw in the Market Place during the Sunday morning
open air service and enjoyed the Frii-spray (legalised graffiti care of modern
technology) in the Church.
Our visitors watched a ten-minute video created by rural dean Taffy Davies
going back in pictures and sound to Barnabys of long ago. People also
came for a quiet sit and a cup of tea or coffee and a chat. Money raised
from the sale of refreshments was donated to the East Cheshire Hospice. A
number of our visitors had never been in this or any other church for a very
long time even though some had lived in Macclesfield for most of their lives.
Many of them commented on the church and asked about various aspects
of church life.

In 2010 we were delighted to receive the -
Award of the Northwest Multi-
faith Tourism Association
(NMMFTA) Marque of
Excellence to St Michael’s
The award is given to sacred sites
which provide a high level of visitor
welcome and experience. The
Archdeacon of Macclesfield, Ven
Richard Gillings and Macclesfield
Town Mayor Cllr David Neilson were
among our guests who included all
who work to keep the church open
and welcoming. Choral evensong
was led by a joint choir from St
Michael’s and the King’s School
under the leadership of Simon
Mercer.
The award was presented to The
Archdeacon by Joanna Booth development officer of NWMFTA who
emphasised the ‘wow’ factor and welcome at St Michaels.
St Michael’s new Guide Book
- was also launched at this ceremony.
Written by Matthew Hyde this full
coloured guide describes many of the
interesting features, effigies and stained
glass. The Guide is available price
£3.50 from the Bookstall or coffee
servery.
If anyone would like to join our welcome
team please contact David Wightman or
Eve Budget.

During the weekend 17-19th June 2011 the
whole Town was alive with a buzz of activity
and good nature as the celebration of
Barnaby returned again to Macclesfield.
Barnaby was the traditional holiday weekend
when the whole Town decamped to places
like Blackpool and Scarborough.
This year Barnaby celebrated the 750th
Anniversary of the granting of Macclesfield's
Charter
At St Michael’s we were pleased to
be a key part of the whole festival
and to join in with the Town’s
celebrations. Events at St Michael’s
included a concert by King Edwards
Musical Society (www.kems.org.uk/)
including a new composition for the
750th Anniversary of Macclefield's
Charter which was broadcast on
Radio 3 and an open air service in
the Marketplace on Sunday
morning.
On Friday 17th June St. Michael’s was
the venue for a live Radio 4 broadcast of
“Any Questions”.
St. Michael’s also offered guided tours
with historian, Matthew Hyde, of the
oldest parts of the church (including the
Savage Chapel Tower), in conjunction
with Rotary for the 750th Anniversary of
Charter, with proceeds going to the
Rotary charities.
