The church is situated in a pedestrianised

The Macclesfield Barnaby Festival Weekend
During the weekend 18-20th 2010 June the
whole Town was alive with a buzz of activity
and good nature as the celebration of
Barnaby returned to Macclesfield. Barnaby
was the traditional holiday weekend when
the whole Town decamped to places like
Blackpool and Scarborough. This year a
group of people had the idea to celebrate
Barnaby with an art festival and there were
events and exhibitions al over Town.  At St
Michael’s we were pleased to be a
key part of the whole festival and to
join in with the Town’s celebrations.
We estimate that around 2000
people visited St Michael’s during
the weekend to visit one of our
cardigan*, Frii-spray (legalised
graffiti care of modern technology),
and a ten-minute video created by
rural dean Taffy Davies going back
in pictures and sound to Barnabys of
long ago.  People also came for a quiet
sit and a cup of tea or coffee and a chat.
£312 was raised from the sale of
refreshments for the East Cheshire
Hospice.  A number of our visitors had
never been in this or any other church for
a very long time even though some had
lived in Macclesfield for most of their
lives.  Many of them commented on the
church and asked about various aspects of
church life.
The conclusion of the weekend for us
was the Festival Choral Evensong with
the Archdeacon of Macclesfield (Ven
Richard Gillings) as guest speaker with
music from St Michael’s choir. There
was a much larger congregation than
usual for this service and it was a
very fitting end to a really enjoyable
festival.
The Revd David Wightman

Mercer.
The award was presented to The Archdeacon by Joanna Booth

welcome at St Michaels.
